The Process

Our gardens are part of our homes, the most exciting part, always changing, never the same from day-to-day. Our own little safe haven outside that we can share with family, friends, nature and wildlife. Both functional and beautiful all year round.

Not everyone’s is though, and it’s often because people don’t know what they want, how to go about achieving it, how much it will cost, and how to maintain it afterwards. But, transforming your garden doesn’t have to be a daunting or terribly expensive process.

1. Garden Consultation

If you know you want to bring your garden to life but don’t know where to start, then book me for a garden consultation. When you’re unsure of what you want and don’t have an over-arching plan to work to, a lot of money can be easily wasted. I will spend an hour and a half with you looking at your garden, offering ideas and advice, so you have a plan to start to work towards. I can provide a simple follow-up report, 2-3 pages long, with thoughts and ideas of what we have just discussed. Or alternatively, some design ideas on how to lay out your garden and borders, 3 simple pencil line drawings to scale with ideas on how to design the whole layout of your garden.

2. Bespoke Planting Plan & Maintenance Plan

A lot of money can be easily wasted on buying plants that aren’t right for the conditions your garden has to offer, with too many or too few plants being bought to fill the required space as well. Working at Beth Chatto Gardens for over 15 years, means whilst my plans are simply drawn, they contain beautiful planting combinations that will offer colour and interest all year round, as well as being the right plants to thrive in your garden's conditions. You will find that investing in a bespoke hand-drawn planting plan with accompanying plant maintenance plan is definitely worth it for the short, medium and long-term future of your garden.

3. Plant Sourcing

After receiving your planting plan and maintenance plan, the process of sourcing all of the required plants can be a daunting one. I can use my knowledge and network of different plant nurseries to source the plants for you at competitive prices and deliver them straight to your garden, ready for planting.

4. Planting Up Borders

If you would like to have the confidence in knowing that your new plants have been planted in the correct position and in the proper way, then I can plant up your new borders for you too. I can advise when would be the best time to plant up your borders, whether you need additional compost or soil improvement, and provide advice on the immediate aftercare to help them establish well.

5. Follow-Up Help & Advice

I take great pride in knowing that the gardens and planting schemes I help with establish well and flourish for years to come, so I will always be on hand with any help or advice that’s needed to continue the development of your garden. I always say that when a garden is planted up, it’s not finished – it has just started!

Additional Work

I aim to make the whole process of developing your garden as enjoyable and affordable as possible. Whilst my knowledge and skill set lies with plants and how to create a garden, my brother-in-law, James, is a fully qualified hard landscaper (The Landscape Guy – www.thelandscapeguy.co.uk) and is available to contact about any potential hard landscape work that may need doing too.
